SCOPE OF WORK

The UCSD cogeneration plant is presently a simple cycle facility, producing both electricity and steam. There are two turbine generators. The present electrical energy output is 28MW. Modifications to the turbines can produce a maximum of 20MW.

This project is the first design-build approach for UCSD. The campus' central plant will utilize the steam output from the burning of natural gas. The steam can be used for both heating and cooling.

The central plant has both electric and steam absorption chillers for the cooling. The unusual and complicated aspect of this project is that the co-generation plant is about a mile and a half from the utility service for the campus. At the energy rates that were in place at the time of contract (Jan. 1, 2000), the pay back was calculated at three and a half years.
